Week 10- Ferris State 42 Northwood 10

The Northwood University football team closed out the home portion of their schedule with a 42-10 loss to Ferris State Saturday afternoon (November 9).

Ferris State improves to 7-3 overall, 7-2 in the GLIAC. Northwood falls to 2-8 overall, 1-7 in the GLIAC.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start, scoring the only two touchdowns of the first quarter to earn a 14-0 lead after one.  FSU then extended their lead to 21-0 when the Timberwolves got on the board.  Senior Eric Williams (Romulus, Mich./Inkster) caught a three-yard pass from Mitch Robinson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) to cap an impressive 93-yard drive and make the score 21-7.

That touchdown would be the last one of the day for Northwood, however. The Bulldogs found the end zone one more time before halftime to lead 28-7 at the break.  FSU then out-scored the Timberwolves 14-3 after halftime.  NU's only points came on a 22-yard Keegan Hagarty (Macomb, Mich./Albion College).

For the game, Ferris finished with a 492-244 edge in total yards.  The Bulldogs had 163 yards passing and 329 yards rushing overall.  Northwood totaled 164 yards passing and 80 yards rushing.

Robinson finished with 164 yards passing and a team-high 35 yards rushing.  Devonta Elzy (Chicago, Simeon) led all receivers with 100 yards on six receptions.  Michael Fisher (Rochester, Mich./Adams) led the defensive effort with 11 tackles.

Northwood will travel to Hillsdale Saturday (November 16) to close out the season.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Week 9 - Northern Michigan 34 Northwood 15

The Northwood University football team dropped a 34-15 contest at Northern Michigan Saturday afternoon (November 2).

Northwood falls to 2-7 overall, 1-6 in the GLIAC.  Northern Michigan improves to 3-5 overall and in the GLIAC.

After a scoreless first quarter, both teams moved the ball well in the second quarter. Northern Michigan got a big punt return and then needed just two plays to score a 33 yard touchdown to go up 7-0.  Later in the quarter, Northwood drove 38 yards and earned a Keegan Haggarty (Macomb, Mich./Albion College) 24-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.  NMU responded by going right down the field on a 76 yard drive, capped by a touchdown to go up 14-3.  The Timberwolves put together a good drive of their own, going 66 yards on 15 plays.  But NU failed to score after earning first and goal at the two yard line, sending the game to halftime with the Wildcats still up 14-3.

The Timberwolves got the second half off to a great start, going 67 yards on nine plays.  The drive was capped by a Mark Morris (Macomb, Mich./Macomb Dakota) seven yard run, making the score 14-9.

After NMU scored another TD to extend the lead to 20-9, the key part of the game came late in the third into the early part of the fourth quarter. The Timberwolves drove down into the NMU redzone, but their field goal attempt was blocked.  The Wildcats then scored a touchdown six plays later, extending their advantage to 27-6.  Northwood lost a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, which the Wildcats took down for another touchdown to go up 34-6.

The Timberwolves capped the scoring early in the fourth quarter on a Morris to Devonta Elzy (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) six yard touchdown pass.

For the game, Northwood finished with advantages in most statistical categories.  The Timberwolves out-gained the Wildcats 419-372, finished with a 31-16 advantage in first downs and held a 30:37-29:23 edge in time of possession.  But missed opportunities doomed the Timberwolves.  Northwood scored on just three of seven trips into the Northern Michigan redzone.  In all, the Timberwolves had seven possessions reach Northern Michigan territory where they failed to score.

Morris finished the game with 290 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. Glenn Winston (Detroit, Mich./Michigan State) had 75 yards rushing to lead the ground attack.  Eric Williams (Romulus, Mich./Inkster) and Elzy totaled 71 and 70 yards, respectively, receiving.

Northwood will host their final home game of the season next Saturday (November 9), taking on Ferris State.  Game time is set for Noon.

Week 8 - GVSU 23 Northwood 17

Football Falls to Grand Valley State 23-17

The Northwood University football team dropped a hard-fought 23-17 contest to Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon (October 26).

GVSU improves to 6-2 overall, 4-2 in the GLIAC.  Northwood falls to 2-6 overall, 1-5 in the GLIAC.

Northwood scored the only points of the first quarter.  The Timberwolves went 42 yards on seven plays on the scoring drive, which was capped by a Keegan Haggarty (Macomb, Mich./Albion College) 37-yard field goal to make the score 3-0.

Early in the second quarter, GVSU responded with a field goal of their own to level the score, but Northwood came right back with the first touchdown of the game.  The Timberwolves blocked a GVSU punt, which set up a nine-yard pass from Mark Morris (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) to  Carrington Thompson (Houston, Mich./Lamar).  That touchdown proved to be the last score of the opening half, giving the Timberwolves a 10-3 lead at the break.  Northwood held the lead despite being out-gained 209-112 in the opening 30 minutes

Both teams scored one touchdown in the third quarter.  After the Lakers tied the game at 10 early in the third quarter, Northwood took advantage of an unusual play about midway through the quarter.  The Timberwolves were driving, but Morris' pass near the endzone was intercepted by GVSU's DeVonte' Jones.  Jones returned the ball to the 14 yard line, where NU's Jordan Jonker (Hudsonville, Mich.) stripped the ball, which was recovered by Northwood's Devonta Elzy (Chicago, Ill./Simeon). Five plays later, Glenn Winston (Detroit, Mich./ Michigan State) found the end zone from two yards out.  That TD sent the game to the fourth quarter with the Timberwolves on top 17-10.

GVSU was the better team in the fourth quarter, however, scoring 13 unanswered points.  The Lakers tied the game at 17 with 13:39 to go and then took the lead with a touchdown with 4:43 remaining. Northwood drove to the GV 30 yard line on their final drive, but stalled out on four straight incomplete passes.

For the game, Grand Valley State finished with a 441-245 advantage in total yards.  Northwood finished with 168 yards passing and 77 yards rushing.

Winston finished 71 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Timberwolves. Morris threw for 168 yards and a TD, while Thompson had 83 yards receiving and a TD.  Michael Fisher (Rochester, Mich./Adams) led the Northwood defensive effort with 13 tackles.

Northwood will travel to Northern Michigan Saturday (November 2). Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Week 7- Michigan Tech 33 Northwood 31

Football Drops 33-31 Contest To Michigan Tech

The Northwood University football team dropped a heartbreaking 33-31 contest as time expired to Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon (October 19).

Northwood falls to 2-5 overall, 1-4 in the GLIAC.  Michigan Tech improves to 4-2 overall and in the GLIAC.

Michigan Tech was the better team in the first half, earning 14-0 lead at halftime.  The Huskies held a 262-96 edge in yards at the break and a 14-2 advantage in first downs.  MTU had a rushing touchdown in the first and second quarter to earn the lead at the break.

Northwood got on the board early in the third quarter,  thanks to a big kick return by Bryan Thomas (Pompano Beach, Fla.).  He returned the opening kickoff of the second half 75 yards to put Northwood deep in MTU territory.  NU eventually scored on a five yard pass from Mark Morris (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) to Devonta Elzy (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) to make the score 14-7.

MTU responded with a TD of their own to go up 21-7, but the Timberwolves came to life in the fourth quarter.  Northwood scored 17 straight points, starting with a Dan Richmond (Hartland, Mich.) 29-yard TD reception from Morris to make the score 21-14.  NU then got a 39-yard field goal from Keegan Haggarty (Macomb, Mich./Albion College) to cut the Huskies lead to 21-17.

Michigan Tech was driving to extend their lead when the Northwood defense made a big play.  Nick Tripp (Detroit, Mich./Crockett) picked up a fumble deep in NU territory and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown, giving the Timberwolves their first lead of the day at 24-21.

That TD set up a wild final few minutes of the game.  MTU scored a TD less than 1:30 later, but missed the extra point to make the score 27-21.  Northwood came right back, finding the end zone with under a minute remaining.  Richmond scored his second touchdown of the day, this time from 26-yards away.  Haggarty's extra point made it a 31-27 lead for the Timberwolves.

MTU made its way down field in the final seconds and had the ball at the NU six yard line with four seconds remaining.  Huskie quarterback Tyler Scarlett's pass was intended for a receiver in the back of the end zone, but it was deflected by a Northwood defender.  Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, the deflection went right to Jordan McConnell, who caught the pass in the front of the end zone to give Michigan Tech the win.

MTU finished the game with a 583-325 advantage in total yards.  Northwood finished with 242 passing yards and 83 yards passing.  NU stayed in the game thanks to being a plus two in turnovers (3-1).

Morris finished the game with 242 yards passing and three touchdowns.  Richmond had 86 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. Cody Ellwanger (Rochester Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) led the Northwood defense with 12 tackles.
