Week 6 - SVSU 44 Northwood 28

Football Falls 44-28 At Saginaw Valley State

The Northwood University football team dropped a 44-28 contest against rival Saginaw Valley State Saturday night (October 12).

Northwood's record now stands at 2-4 overall, 1-3 in the GLIAC   SVSU is 5-1 overall, 5-0 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves got off to a good start early on, jumping out to a 21-10 lead early in the second quarter.  NU got the scoring going on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Mitch Robinson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) to Jordan Jonker (Hudsonville, Mich.) to put the Timberwolves up 7-0.

After the Cardinals tied the score, Northwood went right down the field again.  Their 67-yard drive was capped by a four-yard touchdown run by Glenn Winston (Detroit, Mich./Michigan State) to make the score 14-7.

SVSU made a field goal to make the score 14-10 late in the first quarter, but the Timberwolves responded by scoring a touchdown for their third straight drive.  Jonker caught his second receiving touchdown of the game on a third and eight play, going 25-yard from Robinson to make the score 21-10.

Saginaw Valley took over at that point, however.  The Cardinals scored the next 34 points, giving SVSU a 44-20 lead late in the third quarter.

Northwood got back on the board with an impressive drive in the fourth quarter.  The Timberwolves went 99 yards on 11 plays, capped by a Mark Morris (Macomb, Mich. /Macomb Dakota) one yard run to make the score 44-28 with 6:01 remaining.  But the Cardinals did not allow Northwood to get the ball back, holding the ball the rest of the way to earn the win.

For the game, SVSU finished with a 591-364 edge in total yards.  Northwood finished the game with 149 yards rushing and 215 yards passing. The Cardinals had 356 yards rushing and 235 yards passing.

Winston finished the game with 132 yards rushing and a touchdown on 27 carries.  Jonker led the NU receivers with 56 yards and a touchdown. Mike Keith (Roseville, Mich. /Warren De La Salle) led the Northwood defense with 14 tackles.

Northwood will host Michigan Tech next Saturday (October 19).  Game time is set for Noon.
